Beef decision threatens political stability

09/06/2008

Protests in South Korea over the government’s decision to allow beef exports from the US to recommence have continued and intensified in recent days. Some commentators have suggested that the entire cabinet in President Lee Myung Bak’s government could be prepared to resign.

A delegation travelled to the US on June 9 to seek a written commitment from the authorities in Washington that no cattle aged 30 months or older would feature in shipments to Korea.

Exports of beef from the US were banned in Korea in October 2007 after specified risk materials—in this case bits of vertebral column— were found in shipments.
