Lake contamination leads to tannery closure
06/06/2008
The authorities in Latin America have moved to close down another tannery.
This latest incident took place in Paraguay, where environmental experts in Asunción said the Vernon Tannery was responsible for high levels of toxicity in a local lake.
A radio station reported complaints from local people about levels of contamination in the waters of the lake and the environmental investigation team from the city authorities found the tannery to be to blame. The team’s director, Dr Hugo Cañiza said he would present the matter to the courts with a view to having the facility cease production until its waste management practices improve.
