Pakistan: industry demands 6% R&D support

06/06/2008

With Pakistan’s next state budget to be announced on June 11, the country's leather is urging the government to include increased support for its research and development (R&D) efforts.

Fawad Ijaz Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers &
Exporters Association (PLGMEA), said that this is the right time to invest in R&D activities. He insisted there was considerable demand for leather garments throughout the world market and that Chinese as well as Indian exporters were facing rising production costs and problems because of currency exchange rates.

He said Pakistan’s exporters of leather garments would be able to capture a significant share of the world market if the government agreed to provide 6% R&D support.
