Leather city for Karachi?
05/06/2008
The leather industry in Pakistan has sent a set of 24 proposals and suggestions to the government for incorporation in the federal budget for the next finiancial year (July 2008 to June 2009), which is likely to be announced on June 10.
The chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA), Mr. S.M. Naseem said the measures would help the sector continue to increase its volume of exports and help it achieve an export target of $1.5 billion by 2010.
Among the ideas submitted was the request that the government provide financial support to tanners for research and development and the purchase of new technology to help them meet new trends in international markets.
The list also included the suggestion that infrastructure, including the supply of water and energy to tanneries needed to improve. Mr Naseem said this would help the industry attract investment from overseas, especially from Europe.
Other proposals addressed the need for training for tannery workers and the need to make it easier for tanners import hides and skins from neighbouring India. Mr Naseem also asked the government to help the industry set up a new tanning cluster in the Korangi district of Karachi.
