Chennai: hides confusion over
02/06/2008
Top officials of the All India Skin and Hide Tanners and Merchants Association (AISHTMA) have told www.leatherbiz.com that more or less all the containers of hides held at the port of Chennai have been released by customs officials, though the importers have had to bear additional costs and procedural difficulties, besides the impac the situation has had on production.
The department of Animal Husbandry has agreed to allow imports of raw hide, skins and leather till June 30, against the production of a certificate from the animal quarantine authorities. AISHTMA said it would continue to lobby the government for further amendments to exempt hides and skins from these restrictions in future.
Last financial year (April 2006 until March 2007) India imported hides, skins and leather
worth of $357 million.
