Opposition to central bank moves

The leather industry in Pakistan has spoken out against initiatives from the country’s central bank to curb inflation and the lack of foreign currency (US dollars) in the country’s economy.

Mr S.M. Naseem, the chairman of the Pakistan Tanners’ Association (PTA), said in a press statement that moves to increase import duties would increase production costs for the leather industry. He urged the government to exempt hides and skins, saying that these changes would make life even more difficult for exporters, who already face fierce competition in the global marketplace.
