Bolivia owes so much to small businesses
23/05/2008
Eighty per cent of Bolivian exporters are from the small and medium enterprise sector, according to a new study from the country's institute for external commerce (IBCE), and these companies are also the principal source of employment growth.
But just three product types account for 70% of exports in the Andean country: leathergoods, wood and textiles.
The study said small companies were being short-changed in terms of how much attention they received from government in relation to their contribution to the Bolivian economy. It called on the government to help these companies invest in new technology and improve their productivity so that they can become more competitive on the international stage.
