Local producers still dominate in leather

Manufacturing in Argentina is suffering from a surge in imported goods, but the leather sector is holding firm, according to Raúl Zylbersztein, president of the country's chamber of leather producing industries.
He admitted that, for products such as children's backpacks, synthetic material now dominated and that most goods in these categories now came from Asia. "But where real leather is concerned, local manufacturers still do much more," he said.
He urged the Argentinian government to apply a 35% tariff on these imports, the maximum allowed by the World Trade Organisation, to bring leathergoods into line with footwear.
