Kashmir cashes in

Two hundred or 250 families in the Kashmir Valley are taking advantage of the region's passion for meat-eating and the demand for hides and skins from tanneries in all parts of India to boost the local economy.

Local media have suggested that hide traders may now be transporting 3 million hides and skins of cattle, sheep and goats from Kashmir and that this part of the economy, including those engaged in salting the hides and transporting them, is worth millions of rupees.
