Industry may take a year to approve water

Tanners in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico's main footwear production centre, have said it may take a year for them to say for sure if a new source of water will be able to meet their needs.
The president of local leather organisation Cicur, Sergio Castro Enríquez, said tanners in the area had been complaining about problems in the water supply for 15 years. The city of León has set up a new supply company, Sapal, but Mr Castro made it clear that tanners want to be sure the treated water coming from this source will do no harm to the leather they produce.
Cicur has engaged an external organisation, Barcelona-based investigation laboratory AIICA to carry out the necessary tests, but is expecting Sapal to finance the exercise.
Five tanneries will take part, using Sapal's water in different quantities to carry out their whole range of processes. Mr Castro warned the whoe project could take a year.
