Tunisia: leather provides quality jobs

16/05/2008

The authorities in Tunisia have hailed the leather and footwear sectors as encouraging sources of high-quality jobs.

Official figures suggest that there are 450 small and medium-sized companies in the North African country devoted to producing leather, leathergoods and leather shoes. Together, they employ at least 40,000 people, whom the government describes as “qualified and competent”.

Almost half of these companies have signed up for employee training with a government skills programme and the authorities believe this has proved worthwhile because the sector as a whole has been able to increase production and grow exports.

Last year, the increase in exports from the leather sector was 46%.
