Penguin Books is preparing a leather-bound collection of some of the books in its famous Penguin Classics series.
The publisher launched the series in 1946 with a translation of Homer’s The Odyssey and it now comprises more than 1,000 books, including 47 titles by William Shakespeare, 23 by John Steinbeck, 20 by Henry James, 19 by Charles Dickens and 16 by Graham Greene.
London-based leathergoods designer Bill Amberg is working on the leather covers for the books. He said at the Leather—Beast to Beauty conference near Oxford that the launch of the new leather-bound editions of the books would be in November.
Mr Amberg said: “It's a very exciting project. We're using vegetable-tanned material because we're going for intimacy and that ‘ageing’ look I love so much.”
