Chemical watch

15/05/2008

The federal government of Canada is  in the process of reviewing 200 chemicals to determine whether they pose a risk to human health or the environment and should be more closely regulated.

The initiative is part of the government's Chemical Management Plan, which was unveiled in December 2006.

The government has divided the chemicals it wants to look at into groups of 15–30 substances that it will examin over three years. A total of 12 batches of chemicals are being reviewed, with results announced approximately every three months.

Interested parties have 60 days to comment once the results are released.

Included in the most batch is cyclotetrasiloxane, octamethyl (D4), a low-viscosity silicone fluid used in leathergoods.
