Leather exports rise and fall (depending on currency)

India’s leather exports in first ninth months of last financial year showed growth of 10%.

Total exports of leather and leather products for the period (April-December 2007) reached $2.48 billion against $2.25 billion in the corresponding period the year before.

However, in rupee terms, exports declined by 2.5%.

Leather for footwear surpassed $1 billion, growth of 17.4%.

The major markets for Indian leather products are Germany with a share of
14%, Italy with 13.4%, the UK with 12%, the US with 9.1%, Hong Kong with 8%, Spain with 5.9%, and
France with 5.5%.
