Llama leather to boost rural economy

13/05/2008

Bolivia’s ministry for rural development is to launch a programme to encourage rural communities to make more of camelids, including making greater use of their hides to make leather.

The four species of camelids native to South America are the llama, the alpaca, the vicuña and the guanaco.

The ministry said these animals were already one of the pillars of the country's rural economy and insisted communities in country areas deserved to receive help in making the most of the resources available.
