Tanners protest at high cost of testing

12/05/2008

The 280 tanners active in the town of San Benito in northeast Colombia have complained that environmental authorities are making it impossible for them to comply with legislation on waste management by insisting that the companies pay for their own testing.

Many of the tanners are small businesses and they insist the cost of carrying out tests is too high for them to bear on their own. Testing on effluent and solid waste in this part of Colombia is in the exclusive hands of a private firm, Aseo Capital. Tanners say the company is charging too much.

Only four of the 280 facilities is in possession of certification from the environmental authorities on effluent and none has approval for managing solid waste. But one the tanners, who asked to remain nameless, has said the prohibitive cost of the tests was holding back development in the industry.
