Jalandahar looks for special status
Representatives of the leather industry in the state of Punjab have asked the government to grant Special Economic Zone status to the cluster of production facilities in the city of Jalandhar. This would give them tax advantages when exporting footwear and leathergoods.
About 100 factories linked to the leather sector are active in the city.
Industry leaders presented the petition to local industry minister, Ashwini Kumar. He commented afterwards: “The leather Industry in Punjab is not working to its potential.” He said the levels of technical expertise and skill in Punjab deserved international recognition. He said he would submit the request for Special Economic Zone status to “the relevant authorities”.
