The Indian state of Maharashtra will eliminate child labour by 2010. The state’s labour officer, Vishwas Jadhav, made the pledge on May 1, Labour Day in India and many other countries.

During recent inspections of places of work around the state, which has Mumbai as its capital, the government said it had rescued more than 3,000 child-workers and arrested more than 800 employers. There have been raids on leathergoods manufacturers, Mr Jadhav confirmed.

He said the
Maharashtra government would eliminate “the most hazardous and dangerous forms” of child labour before the end of this year, and would end all forms of the practice in the state within two years.
