Prices up—but not for leather

Official government statistics show that Italy’s price index for the month of March rose significantly in comparison with March 2007, with leather as the principal exception.

Overall, prices were up by 0.8% for March and, cumulatively, by 6.3% for the year so far.

For March alone, petrol prices were 30% higher than a year ago, and products in the food, drink and tobacco space were up by 10.6%. Leather and leathergoods, however, showed a drop in price of 1.7%
