Guinness Book of Records attempt boosts beef

The beef industry in Uruguay has won a place in the Guiness Book of Records after it organised a mega barbecue earlier this month.

More than 1,000 chefs gathered in Montevideo at a grill spanning 1.5 kilometres to barbecue 12 tonnes of beef. The industry wanted to use the stunt to promote local beef, and 20,000 people turned up to encourage the cooks and sample the meat. The crowd gave an especially loud cheer when the official judge from the Guinness Book of Records confirmed that it was the largest event of its kind in the world so far, beating a previous record-holding barbecue in Mexico.

One of the chefs said afterwards: "I am proud to be Uruguayan. We have always had the best beef on the planet and now we have the largest barbecue in the world."
