Market summary claims drop in hide prices
23/04/2008
The organisers of the Lineapelle exhibition in Bologna released a market summary on the opening day of the event, April22.
The report, which focused on the first quarter of 2008, said raw hides had dropped in price by 5% compared to the fourth quarter of 2007.
But compared to the first quarter of last year, it said the price of cow hides had fallen by 20%.
The price of sheep and goatskins on the other hand had risen by 30% according to the calculations of the Lineapelle team.
The report said tanners exhibiting at the event had expressed "cautious optimism" for the immediate months ahead. The strength of the leathergoods sector, especially in Italy, was the main reason for the overall positive mood, even if there were more concerns about the end of 2008.
