Climate change takes its toll

According to reports, climate change around the globe is having an extremely negative impact on the Turkish textile industry. A noted decrease in demand has been reported as warmer temperatures allow people to wear lighter, cooler garments.

Along with the impact of negative currency effects and higher raw material prices, rising temperatures have affected exports, particularly to Russia, which accounts for just under a third of its leather exports. The country is now looking to expand its focus on exports to the US and Japan in order to redress the balance.

Reports indicate that Turkish leather exports totalled $1.24 billion compared with leather imports worth $1.77 billion.
