Tandy Leather Factory starts promoting UK site

Two months after opening its doors, Tandy Leather Factory has begun a campaign to promote its new UK retail outlet, its first in Europe.

The company recently released disappointing results for March, owing to the difficult retail environment in its main market, the US, but it said it was pleased by the early success of its new UK operation in Northampton, even though it had not yet promoted it.

The president of the company's Canadian operations, John McNiven, took on responsibility for setting up the European venture at the end of last year. He has spoken about the reasons for choosing Northampton, saying: "
it is known as the leather capital of the UK because of its many tanneries and shoe manufacturing. It was also selected due to its central location and the fact that it is easy to get to by rail or road."

Mr McNiven went on to pay tribute to local inward investment agencies,
Northamptonshire Enterprise Limited and East Midlands Development Agency. He said they had been working hard to help Tandy even before his departure from Canada. One of the things they did was organise visits for new members of staff to the nearby British School of Leather Technology at the University of Northampton, one of the world's top centres for training leather technologists and technicians.
