Middle Eastern countries are importing more food from Brazil than ever before, with meat leading the way. Exports in this sector from Brazil to the region reached $1.2 billion in the first quarter of 2008, a rise of 27% compared to last year.
Sales of Brazilian beef and chicken rose by more than 50% to reach $685 million, while cereals and flour brought in $70 million in export revenues from the Middle Eastern market, an increase of 800%. Something similar happened with dairy products; Arab countries spent more than $30 million with the Brazilian dairy sector during the first three months of the year, a rise of 140%.
Leather and leathergoods exports have gone up to. The Middle East imported almost 25% more from the leather sector in the first part of this year compared to the same period in 2007.
The authorities in Brazil said they were delighted to experience such positive growth in a part of the world where the economy was so strong and growing above the global average.
