Fimec closes on positive note

11/04/2008

The industry and professional associations that underpin the Fimec event in Brazil have all declared themselves happy with this year's exhibition, which ended on April 11.

Luis Amaral, president of footwear manufacturers' association Assintecal said:"We have seen lots of innovation at this edition of the fair. Everyone knows this is not the best time for our industry and I imagined that numbers at Fimec would be down; they haven't been and the people who have come have been very highly qualified, serious people."

He said he thought this reflected the state of the industry in Brazil. The country, he said, was becoming more serious about business. "People think Brazil is just about beaches and football," he continued, "but take a look at São Paulo. It's one of the greatest metropolises in the world and you cannot build a metropolis like that just by playing football."

He said the event had proved to him once again that, for foowear manufacture, everything required could be sourced in Brazil.

The president of the Association of Brazilian Leather Chemists and Technologists (ABQTIC), Vilmar Trevisan, said he thought the whole industry should feel satisfaction at what had happened at this year's Fimec. He said one of the things that had made a great impression on him was that a new generation of leather chemists was coming forward, bringing with them a great appetite to respect the environment, which he said was exactly what the industry needed.
