Uppers up, soles down

Pakistan has registered growth of 14.6% in production of upper leather to 1.7 million square-metres in January 2008 from 1.5 million square-metres in January 2007.

Pakistan also produced almost 2 million pairs of footwear in January 2008 compared
to 1.4 million pairs in January 2007, an increase of 40.06%. However, sole production fell by 33% to 4 tonnes from 9 tonnes in January 2007.

Pakistan´s total production of upper leather for July to January 2007-08
(the first seven months of the current financial year) was just short of 12 million square metres, which is a million more than for the same period last year, an increase of 9.77%.

Footwear stood at 13.9 million pairs, up from 13.1 million, which represents a growth of 5.9%. But production of sole leather fell by 22.4% to 59 tonnes from 76 tonnes over the same period.
