Tannery shares blame for water problems

Local politicians in the area around San Antonio de Areco in the province of Buenos Aires have complained of high levels of contamination in the local river, the Areco, which they say has been caused by poor waste management practices at food processing plants in the area and at a tannery in the town of Carmen de Areco.
One politician, Fabio Sorchille, told local media: “We don’t want this to become like the city of Buenos Aires. Our river still has fish in it and there are places along the banks where people can swim. We want to keep that. We don’t want companies setting up factories here if they don’t have the resources to meet even the most basic environmental management requirements.”
