Seals sell for less

A Canadian tannery operator says top-grade seal pelts are selling for around half the price they were bringing last year.
The director of operations at NuTan Furs in Catalina, Newfoundland, Dion Dakins, has told local media that the pelts are likely to fetch about $33 this year. Last season, local sealers secured almost double that price, and the year before there was so much competition among buyers that the price of pelts went over $100 at one point.
Mr Dakins said the situation in previous years meant buyers paid too much for lower-quality pelts that they struggled to sell, and were now adjusting the prices they were offering to satisfy their customers’ needs and encourage their customers to buy.
There is still a demand for seal fur, he said, but not at the high prices of 12 or 24 months ago.
