Clean-up plan almost in place

The city authorities in Whitehall, Michigan, have said they are hopeful of working closely with tanning company Genesco to submit a site clean-up plan for the land that one of its tanneries occupied until 2003.

The buildings of the former Whitehall Tannery—which produced leather for more than a century—were demolished last year, but plans to build homes on the site will require approval from the US federal Department of Environmental Quality that the site is safe.

Genesco has hired a specialist partner, Horizon Environmental Corporation, to carry out expert analysis of the site, with a particular focus on wastewater treatment lagoons that remain on the site.
