Waste concerns close tannery

Police in the town of Serino in the province of Avellino in Campania in southern Italy have closed off the area around a tannery because of the illegal dumping of effluent.
The authorities said the owners of the unnamed tannery had been warned on several previous occasions about waste management at the site and said they were most concerned of all about the people who worked there who must, they said, face grave risks to their health and safety every time they go to work.
