Fire at leather factory

A fire has broken out at a tannery in east Kolkata. The authorities said that large quantities of plastic and inflamable materials at the site in Tangra made the fire worse and caused it to spread rapidly.

“We are trying to contain the fire so that it doesn’t spread to factories and houses nearby,” said a fire officer. “There is also scarcity of water and we have depend only on our own supplies. The main problem with these factories are that they don’t have any fire fighting facilities.”

Local media reported that there were no casualties, but said this was the ninth fire incident since January in Tangra, a congested area that is home to a large number of small leather producing companies.
