Major Italian machinery-maker closes down

19/03/2008

One of the principal Italian makers of machinery for the tanning sector, Empoli-based La Mostardini, is to close down.

Operations at the company, a historical player in the leather machinery sector and on the business landscape of the Tuscan town, came to a halt after the break-down of talks between representatives of the owners and a trade union representing the workforce.

The owners are reported to have refused an offer to buy La Mostardini that came in from an unnamed company in the nearby town of Ponte a Elsa. This offer was the only one that included a proposal to retain the 26 employees of La Mostardini.

The trade union called for another meeting today.
