Argentina to export bovine genetics to China
17/03/2008
Argentina is to start exporting bovine genetics to China which seeks to improve the quality of its herd and beef production in view of the strong increase in beef consumption there.
Argentinean cattle breeders Cabaña Don Panos, a company belonging to the Unitec Agro Corporation, is to set up a specialised centre in China’s Anhui province in the coming months, where it is going to send embryos, semen, technology and breeding stock to cross with Chinese animals.
China is the second largest beef producer in the world with an output of 7.9 million tonnes in 2007, but local consumption has been growing at an incredible rate and it is expected to reach 8 million tonnes very soon.
China chose Argentina for this enterprise based on its long cattle-breeding tradition, the quality of its herd and the fact that, last November, it was declared a foot-and-mouth disease free country with vaccination.
