Minister pushes hide prices up

13/03/2008

Argentina's minister for agriculture has pushed through a price rise on hides. The tanning industry in the country has agreed to pay a 5% higher price as a gesture of solidarity towards meat packers.

This measure will stay in place for 150 days.

Meat packers in Argentina have defended themselves against criticism for the rising cost of beef by claiming that price-rises were essential because of the low price tanneries were paying for hides.

Tanners have agreed not to pass on the extra 5% cost to their own customers.
