German minister looks at leather opportunities in China

Germany’s environment minister, Sigmar Gabriel, has visited a tannery in China to  see at first hand a production system that is less harmful to the planet.

Mr Gabriel toured the ISA Tan Tec tannery with a delegation of around 40 people representing government, pressure groups and the business sector. His visit to China consisted mostly of discussions with high-level Chinese officials, but he included the tannery in Guangzhou as the only industrial site on his agenda.

The company said afterwards that Mr Gabriel had expressed great interest in its Lite production system, which aims to keep the tannery’s carbon footprint as low as possible through transparent systematical monitoring of the leather manufacturing process.
