China buys and sells more

As we reported last week, China’s exports of leather shoes fell by 6%, in terms of volume, last year.
However, new figures released by the China
Leather Industry Association today, which focus on value, suggest that the country’s leather sector as a whole grew by 9.3% in 2007.Exports rose to $25.5 billion from $23.3 billion in 2006.
The CLIA figures on leather footwear confirm the drop in volume, but put exports in this category at $9.6 billion compared to $8. billion for the year before.
Leather garment shipments fell by 21.4% to 3,4 million pieces, bringing in $1.3 billion in export revenue, down from $1.6 billion in 2006.
Exports in travel goods, fur garments, leather gloves, leather balls, raw leather hides, skins, components for footwear and leather
equipment all showed increases.
On the other hand, China imported worth $7 billion of leather articles during 2007, a growth of 9.1% from the year before.
