Despite having reported a continued rise in the value of its leather exports (see www.leatherbiz.com February 18, 2008), Brazil’s leather sector reported the highest fall in employment in 2007.

Although overall industrial employment rose 2.2%, compared with 2006, new jobs were created in sectors such as food and drink (+4%), transport (+7.7%), metal products (+7.3%) and machinery and equipment (+7%), while the footwear and leathergoods sector posted a significant 7.3% decline.
