Pollution body cracks down on tanneries

26/02/2008

Some 250 factories and tanneries in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh have reportedly been served with notices by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) due to their failure to disclose the volume of wastewater discharged from their facilities.

According to local sources, the notices were served on some 214 factories, when, following requests from the UPPCB, the units in question failed to install meters in their outlet pipes to monitor the amount of effluent discharged.

Local representatives of the tanning industry have denied any wrongdoing and claim that they are being “harassed” by the UPPCB.
