Argentina beefs up consumption as exports drop
Lower beef prices in comparison with other meats resulted in Argentina posting the highest beef consumption in the last t 21 years in 2007.
According to a report released by Argentina's Chamber for Industry and Commerce of Beef and Beef Derivatives (CICCRA), the country consumed some 197,480 tons more beef on the bone, an impressive 7.9% higher beef than in 2006, to reach 2.689 billion tons (including bones). This equates to average beef consumption of 67.7kg per person in 2007 — 8.9% higher than in 2006.
As well as falling prices, two other factors are increased production (which rose 5.7% year-on-year) and lower beef exports dropped (which fell 4.6%) are also said to have led to the significant rise in domestic consumption.
