Uruguay attracts Iranian attention

20/02/2008

Uruguay appears to be attracting a great deal of positive attention at present.

Following on from British cattle breeder and meat packer 'United Breeders & Packers' (UBP) announcement last week that it is to set up a new beef facility in the country (see www.leatherbiz.com February 14), Iranian ambassador to Uruguay, Morteza Tafreshi, has now revealed that his country will send a delegation of entrepreneurs to the South American country with a view to buying meat packing plants. And, although the Iranian group wishes to explore opportunities in the sheep market rather than beef, this can only be positive for the country’s leather industry considering the global market’s recent move away from bovine and towards ovine leather.

Mr Tafreshi stated that Iran plans to buy one or two plants in the South American country and that investors are currently focusing their search in the departments of Artigas and Salto.
