BMC sale falls through
According to local sources, the sale of Botswana Meat Commission’s (BMC) tannery to the Botswana Development Corporation (BDC) has fallen through due to concerns over the tannery’s environmental credentials.
The BDC decided to withdraw from the proposed deal following an Environmental Impact Assessment which uncovered problems such as a blocked sludge pipe leading from the tannery to the evaporation ponds, odour pollution and an unprotected sludge disposal site that had contaminated a nearby borehole, all of which led to the conclusion that the facility would soon need to be relocated.
The sale of the tannery is part of the BMC’s strategy to turnaround the struggling company.
