Uruguay attracts investment

While Brazil has to deal with an EU ban on its beef, the country’s South American neighbour Uruguay is attracting far more positive attention from Europe.

British cattle breeder and meat packer 'United Breeders & Packers' (UBP) is to invest a total of $1.2 billion in new facilities in the country which will include a 32,000m2 unit located on the border between the department of Durazno and Flores.

The new plant, which is expected to be completed in early 2009, will have a slaughter capacity of 1,200 head per day and is set to employ between 600 and 1,000 people, generating turnover of approximately $200 million per year.

The company, which buys Uruguayan beef — which it then supplies to European supermarkets such as Tesco and Wal-Mart — already owns a company, Carnes Hereford del Uruguay, in the country.
