Moroccan manufacturers pull together
In a move aimed at securing the leather industry’s future in the city and creating a “Made in Fez” label, a group of leathergoods and footwear producers from Fez in Morocco have joined forces to launch a new fashion collection.
Unveiled at a ceremony this week which was attended by the minister of Commerce and New Technologies, the Italian ambassador, representatives from UNIDO and other city dignitaries, the collection was produced by three local leathergoods manufacturers and two shoemakers. It first went on show in Italy last December when manufacturers from Fez also held meetings with Italian companies in order to form contacts and meet potential clients from within the Italian industry.
This latest project forms part of a UNIDO scheme, started in 2001, to protect and relaunch the leather industry in Fez and across the country as a whole.
As the fourth largest city in Morocco, Fez has a long tradition of leather- and shoe-making, although the industry has struggled in recent times.
