Employment in leather sector falls

16/01/2008

Despite many global players in the leather industry such as Lanxess and Rohm and Haas increasing their investment in eastern European countries, and general industrial production continuing to rise, employment in the leather sector fell significantly in the Czech Republic in November.

According to the latest statistics released by the Czech Statistical Office (CSU), the leather and leather goods manufacturing sector recorded the highest drop in employment of any manufacturing industry, with the numbers employed falling a significant 9.4% year-on-year, in spite of a general 1.2% rise in employment levels and a 4% increase in the number of new orders.

One factor that could have attributed to the decline is the strength of the country’s currency (koruna) at present, which led to a 1.9% fall in export prices in November.
