New surfactant launched that won’t cost the earth
German chemical company TFL has launched a new universal ionic surfactant, Borron DN, that it claims will not cost the earth — in terms of the environment or company budgets.
According to the manufacturer the new degreasing agent allows the process costs of ecological leather production to be optimised as it is said to provide high performance while also acting as an “ideal” single surfactant solution for all wet processes in the tannery.
The low foaming surfactant, which is stable to electrolytes and most vegetable tanning agents, is said to remove grease easily in all the leather-making process steps and also offers a very good soaking effect thus enhancing the penetration of subsequent processes and resulting in an improved lay-out and area yield.
As it also carries dirt very well, it has a good cleaning effect thus improving removal. It is also said to help to disperse lime well, thus supporting the opening-up of the hide.
The product is free of nonylphenol ethoxylates and more than 90% biodegradable by OECD standards.
