PTA criticises reduced rebates

04/01/2008

Chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) S.M. Naseem has strongly opposed the government’s decision to cut rebate rates on leather with effect from January 1, which have seen rebates on finished goat and sheepskins reduced from 1.24% to 0.80%, raw cow and buffalo hides cut from 1.64% to 1.17%, finished cow and buffalo hides and side leather reduced from 2.90% to 2.04%.

In a statement, he criticised the government for introducing the revised rates without first consulting with the PTA and claimed that exporters are already suffering due to the increased costs of imported chemicals, which have risen sharply over the past two years while leather prices have remained static.
