Government should lift import tax on raw and wet blue hides

A footwear manufacturer in Bangladesh, Syed Nasim Manzur, has called on the government there to lift import taxes on raw and wet blue hides to help make industries such as his more competitive in the global market.
Bangladesh is expecting to experience a shortage of hides in the months ahead.
In normal years, Bangladeshi tanneries produce 220 million square-feet of leather, with 80% of the hides coming from sacrificed animals during the Eid festival. This year's festival falls this week, but the authorities in Bangladesh have warned that far fewer hides than normal will be available because of the effects of a devastating cyclone that hit in November.
