New leather technology centre gets green light

A new leather technology centre in the state of Mato Grosso has been been given the go-ahead and a tannery that will run on the site will begin operating soon.

One of the business leaders behind the project, Ivo Cescon Scarcelli, said that the centre would open its doors in February and start providing tannery workers throughout Mato Grosso with formal training.

Teachers will come from other parts of the country, such as Rio Grande do Sul, to provide expert tuition.

A regional representative of Sebrae, a state organisation set up to provide support to small and medium-sized businesses, Claudio Mendonça, poointed out that leather was one of Mato Grosso's main raw materials. He said this initiative would help local tanneries add value to the leather they produce, which would, in turn, benefit producers of footwear and leathergoods in the state.
