A disappointing end

The tanning industry cluster around Santa Croce sull'Arno in Tuscany has blamed the weak dollar and a fall in consumer spending for a poor end to 2007.
Figures from the 400 tanneries operating in the area show a drop of 4.34% in production for the last four months of the year.
The tanning facilities in and around Santa Croce have a combined workforce of 9,000 people and a total annual turnover of €2.5 billion.
