Illustrating the Brazilian leather industry’s commitment to environmental protection Luiz Bittencourt, president of the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) which represents 800 tanneries, has planted a yellow ipê to signal the organisation’s support a tree-planting campaign.

Commenting on the CICB’s commitment to the scheme, Mr Bittencourt said: “Companies in the leather production chain are among those that invest the most in environmental projects.”

Launched by Latin America’s largest leather fair Couromoda, the campaign hopes to see some 10,000 trees planted in an attempt to make people aware of the need for environmental preservation. Over 5,000 seedlings of native tree species have already been purchased by sponsors in the leather and footwear sectors.
